Do you incorporate Nature Studies into your homeschooling routine? Is it harder to do as your kids get older? My answer to both of these questions is a resounding "YES!" Some strategies that have worked in our house is to embed Nature Studies as part of our weekly routine and to make sure that we study topics that my kids are actually interested in.
It's easy to peak my kids' interest in Nature Study if we do some type of Stargazing study at night. There are so many apps out there now that can help you identify what you're looking at, which my kids love. One of our favorites is SkyView. With this app, you can hold your device up to the sky and the app can identify what you are seeing. We try to figure out what we're looking at first and then use the app to confirm whether we are correct or not. Some other nighttime nature study ideas are:
Nature study can be a way to tap into the natural curiosity that kids have about the amazing world that we live in. Oh sweet summertime...it's quickly coming to an end and I have very mixed feelings about it. A recovering Type A mom, I do relish the slower pace of summertime. Yet, there is something appealing to getting back into a routine that I do love. As we enjoy these last few weeks of summertime, I've been working on creating my annual "Read aloud list" that I thought I'd share with you. I only have Middle School and High School students in my house now (how is that possible?) which is why you won't find elementary-aged books on my list. There are so many other homeschooling moms that do have lists for younger kids, though. Some of my past favorites are:
